Description
Lester Long in "Clay Pigeons" is another story. He has a fringed-shirt wardrobe inspired by Dwight Yoakam, a mirthless cackle that's Vaughn's own inspired invention, and an airy philosophy: "Some people just need killin'." The film, Phoenix says, "is kind of a twisted buddy movie."

Vaughn wasn't sure about it at first. "I thought, this is kind of sick. Not really my taste. Lester's almost a demonic character, this dark force. But to play it for comedy . . . I thought, this could be cool. Something sort of original."

Clay Pigeons wasn't in the theaters long but not because it wasn't a really good movie. Vince is great in an over-the-top performance as the very disturbing Lester Long. Good performances from the entire cast. But I will warn you that it's pretty dark - don't expect a straight comedy.

And, buy the soundtrack! Along with Rushmore, this is one of the best soundtracks ever. It features Time Bomb from Old 97's, who are one of my favorite bands, and a couple of great remakes [Everybody's Talkin' from Midnight Cowboy and Let Your Love Flow from Little Darlins']. The whole soundtrack is just simply great.

Soundtrack

1. Timebomb - Performed by Old 97's
2. Another Perfect Catastrophe - Performed by Firewater
3. Moon Over Montana - Performed by Jimmy Wakely
4. Everybody's Talkin - Performed by Tonic
5. Sea of Heartbreak - Performed by Don Gibson
6. 1229 Sheffield - Performed by Verve Pipe
7. Almost New - Peformed by Sara Evans
8. Teach me About Love - Performed by Lyle Lovett
9. Let Your Love Flow - Performed by Sister Hazel
10. Stop the CLock - Performed by Tonio K.
11. Moody River - Performed by Pat Boone
12. Clay Pigeons [The Ballad of Lester Long] - Performed by Collapsis

According to the Collapsis: "The song we wrote, entitled "Clay Pigeons (The Ballad of Lester Long)" is written from the perspective of Vince's character in the movie, Lester Long."

Marie Claire Recommends by Elizabeth Weitzman [pictured below]:
Gripping performances from Vince Vaughn, Joaquin Phoenix, and Janeane Garofalo distiguish director David Dobkin's darkly comedic thriller.
